Canada Building Materials began in 1930, when five building supply companies came together with a shared goal: to build something stronger. Since then, CBM has grown alongside Ontario, helping shape the province’s most recognizable skylines and infrastructure, from the CN Tower and Roy Thomson Hall to the CBC building and the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. These landmark projects helped establish CBM’s reputation for reliability, expertise, and the ability to support the kind of work that defines a city.
As Toronto grew into the largest city in Canada, CBM was part of the story behind that growth. The company’s work has helped support the pace, scale, and ambition of a region that continues to evolve, project by project. That legacy is also rooted in the strength of CBM’s vertically integrated relationship with St Marys, which brings together local knowledge, dependable supply, and the operational support needed to keep building with confidence.
In 2001, CBM became part of the Votorantim Cimentos family, adding global strength to its deep regional roots. Today, CBM continues to build on this foundation, combining decades of experience with the resources of a broader network. Guided by Our VC Way, we remain focused on Safety and Health, Trust and Simplicity, and Lasting Results, the values that have helped shape our history and continue to define our future.
Looking ahead, CBM is working toward net-zero concrete by 2050 as part of VCNA’s broader decarbonization plan. This goal reflects our shared commitment to Learning and Evolving, and contributing to a Sustainable Legacy for the communities we serve.
When a delivery is scheduled and a crew is waiting, there is no room for uncertainty. Our customers know that when they call us, they are not just placing an order; they are working with a team that takes the outcome as seriously as they do. Every load is made to order, delivered on a schedule, and placed under real site conditions. Getting this right, time after time, takes more than modern equipment. It takes experienced people who Act with Ownership and accountability: principles at the core of Our VC Way.
We operate as a subsidiary of Votorantim Cimentos North America, one of the world’s leading building materials organizations. In 1998, three well-known construction companies in Western New York joined forces. They were Stone Concrete, CB Concrete, and Frey Concrete. Together, they created United Materials, LLC. Founders Dick Holmes and Wade Cook used their skills, staff, and resources to help more customers in the area.
In 2006, the company grew by buying Scranton’s Thruway Builders Supply. This move made it one of the top building materials suppliers in the area.
United Materials continued to grow by acquiring Morningstar Concrete Products in 2011.
In 2024, our acquisition of WNY Concrete in Batavia, NY, marks an important step in growing our footprint throughout Western New York.
Today, United Materials proudly operates as part of Votorantim Cimentos, a global leader in building materials. Our North American family includes VCNA, Prairie Materials, Superior Materials, Canada Building Materials, and St Marys Cement.
Through it all, we have kept the same foundation: a local company built on trust, quality, and community commitment.
